PCMag: Do organizations have to build their own code to use the Framework in Office 365 or does it come ready to play?īoth is the quick answer. The Fluid Framework is one of the most important pieces of infrastructure we're building to enable that. Its part of the transition of Microsoft 365 from being a particular set of apps to being centered around a person. It really does offer a brand-new way to work. They don't need to be pulled into my big document and figure out where I need input. I can start inside of Word, I can take a bit of content-a paragraph of text or a table-and I can work on just one piece with another group of people and move it into another application like Teams or drop it into an email, and the people on the other side of that chat or email can stay in the flow of their work. The thing that is most exciting for me is that breaking down of barriers between applications.
PCMag: So what else does Fluid offer besides low-latency collaboration? Things like security and compliance scanning, content suggestions, proofing tools. The translation into eight different languages we demonstrated in the keynote. You can bring in intelligent agents alongside people. The other part that's important is scale: We can see thousands of agents or people working inside a single document. We have a bunch of research that shows that once you get the latency of interactions below 50ms or so, people actually behave differently inside those experiences. But it can give Word and Outlook and Teams users a new way of working. There's certainly an application for developers building web experiences broadly. PCMag: Do you see third parties using the framework or is it part of Microsoft 365, Microsoft's business offering that includes Windows 10, Office 365, and security features? We've talked about shared browsing experiences. The latency is so low for things like a shared inking space, that looks like the two screens are one. Any kind of web experience that benefits from two people sharing state. The least common denominator as far as the developer technology goes really is the web. PCMag: What sort of use cases are we looking at here?
The second is for use in Office applications like Word, Outlook, and Teams. The idea is to give developers a much more accessible way to build those and to give them a faster and more scalable tool than what's been available. We've seen all kinds of examples-from that to fantasy football drafts and everything in between.
Rob Howard: We think of there being two different ways it's important: One is for developers as they build out any sort of distributed web application where two people are interacting. PCMag: Where does Fluid Framework fit into Microsoft's offerings? To better understand the Fluid Framework, I spoke with Microsoft's Rob Howard, Senior Director for Office Apps Marketing. But it's not just for Microsoft Office apps the company is making the technology available to third parties as well. A user could, for example, edit an Excel sheet within a Teams chat.
